Welcome back year-round schools! If you’re still on summer vacation, it won’t be long before you’re back in the classroom. This idea is to use in the beginning of the school year with your new students. I first heard about it in a behavior course a couple years ago. The idea is to prepare a simple handout, on which you ask parents to “in a million words or fewer, tell me about your child.”  Parents do the rest. Through this assignment, you can learn so much from parents and families about health issues, social upheaval, and other issues that help you better connect with kids and their parents. Your handout can share examples (e.g., hobbies, talents, difficulties, life in general) or it can be as simple as saying “In a million words or fewer, tell me about your child” and then leave the rest of the page blank for parents to write.
